Justin you have a very good point! Fortunately the "off ramp" idea will never take off - most people just don't think of such things.

Probably not such a good idea to post such alternative ideas online, because the threat of increased accidents at the intersections involved is very real.

With all that being said, I have also used the method the OP describes. Once there was a fatal accident blocking the road ahead on an interstate in upstate South Carolina. Without breaking any laws (like using the shoulder, etc.) I exited the freeway knowing full well that the ramp connected back with the interstate about 1.5 miles ahead, and ahead of the crash. Absolutely amazing that the "masses" didn't figure this out - I am sure I saved myself an hour or more that morning - survival of the fittest, I guess!

I am looking for a get there on time game that I saw once. Where you try to get there exactly on time and not a minute before and not a minute after. I can't seem to find it again. Has anyone seen it?

Hi Justin, thanks for the comment. I think you have a point to a certain extent. I take alternate routes all the time. If I asked the question, "what if everyone else did that?", I would never take an alternate route because the answer would always be the same. If everyone took an alternate route it would be clogged and it wouldn't make any sense to take it.

That is where laws come in... such as you can't turn right on red between 4pm and 6pm. Turning right at 5pm would be a breach of integrity and also an expensive ticket. We could take your question a little further and apply it to the post about getting off coffee. If everyone got off coffee it would do devastating harm to the coffee companies. Can I stop drinking coffee even though if everyone did it it would put thousands of people out of work? Interesting thought.

You just posted an article about integrity. One of the tests of integrity that I use is "What if everyone else did it?".

Take your "off-ramp" idea...what if everyone tried that?

Let me help you out with the consequences: congestion would be worse, there would be more traffic for the folks who are using the off-ramp for its intended purpose, and there could be more accidents (off-ramps feed into intersections which are car wreck factories)

A little research never hurt anybody. While speeding up on your routine at home is doable, traffic is one routine that takes a little more effort to manipulate. A lot of people, including myself, only take one route to work. Whether there's a holiday or it's raining cats and dogs, I'll be using the same road. It's helpful to actually pay attention to minor road situation details. That way, the next time it rains, you know you'll be better off taking the service road or the main street.

Very nice tips.

To me, what really made a difference was when I started getting up exactly at the same time every day. After some time it just gets into you and reduces that hurry feeling. If you have some time left, it's a bonus.
